Primary and Secondary International Women’s Day Competition

Happy International Women’s Day!

To celebrate we are excited to launch our International Women’s Day Competition that is open to all primary and secondary pupils in the UK and Ireland.

The competition

Choose a woman in STEM to celebrate and bring them to life using Scratch. This could be by animating their name, creating a game, a story or making an interactive profile. It is completely up to you, be as creative as possible.

Is it free to enter?

Yes, the competition is free to enter.

When does the competition end?

Entries close at midnight on the 4th of April.

Is this a girls only competition?

No. While dressCode clubs and competitions primarily focus on closing the gender gap and clubs and competitions for girls, we are also helping raise the profile of Computing Science in schools. We know schools in the current situation, as a result of COVID19, are unable to run any clubs. At dressCode we believe now more than ever pupils need more competitions and exciting activities to help inspire them into Computing Science.

Who can take part?

The competition is only open to UK and Ireland primary and secondary schools. But there is nothing stopping schools across the world from using this as a themed lesson in their classes or clubs.

Are you able to provide feedback for entries?

Unfortunately not. Previous competitions have had a significant number of entries and dressCode is run by three teachers, we would love to give feedback to everyone but it’s just not possible. Rest assured that every entry will be considered and judged fairly.

Can we enter as a team?

Unfortunately no, not for this specific competition.

I don’t know how to code using Scratch. Is there anywhere I can go for help?

Not to worry. We would recommend looking at the animation tutorial on the Scratch website to get ideas and help you get started.

Does the women in STEM have to be famous?

No, we know there are so women in STEM out there doing incredible things. This is a great opportunity to help raise their profile and celebrate them.

Can I include more than just the women I have picked to celebrates name and achievements in my Scratch project?

Yes! Be as creative as possible. You can find out more about the judging criteria below.

What is the judging criteria?

The judges will be looking for creative, eye catching entries that stand out and celebrate a women in STEM. There must be code used to make your ideas come to life. This could be an animation, a story, an interactive profile, a game, etc. It is completely up to you.

How do I submit entries?

All entries must be submitted by a teacher using this form bit.ly/IWDcompetition21 Entries must be submitted by an official school email or will not be included in the competition.

I get an error on the form when submitting the Scratch link?

Not to worry. You must submit a valid URL starting with https://

Can pupils submit more than one entry?

No. We are only accepting one entry per pupil. If we receive multiple entries from an individual pupil we will take the first submission as the entry from the competition.

When will the winners be announced?

You will find out who has won before the end of May. We will contact the teacher associated with the winning entry and send out the prize to them.

What are the prizes?

The top 3 entries will get a set of air pods but we also have lots of other mini prizes to give away.

We aren’t able to access Scratch online. Is it OK to send a Scratch file with pupils entries?

Yes. Just send the pupil’s name and year group to competitions@dresscode.org.uk with the Scratch file attached.
