Explore Scotland's Computing Science Landscape with Interactive Dashboard

To gain a deeper understanding of the landscape of Computing Science we have been working with the Scottish Tech Army to create an interactive dashboard of the public date on uptake, gender and teacher numbers for the traditional STEM subject from 1986 forward.

In collaboration with the Scottish Tech Army, we have created an interactive dashboard for the landscape of Computing Science education in Scotland. This innovative tool leverages publicly available data, pulling it together into an interactive format. Special recognitition to Aba-Sah Dadzie, Blaga Baycheva, and Eleanor Mitchell for their hard work and commitment to bringing this project to fruition.

Computing Science plays a vital role across all sectors of the economy, understanding these trends and challenges is extremely important. This interactive dashboard empowers stakeholders with valuable data to inform future strategies and ensure a thriving Computing Science landscape in Scotland. By comparing data with other traditional STEM subjects, it puts into context where Computing Science is in comparison in terms of gender gap, overall uptake, teacher recruitment and teacher age demographic.

Unveiling Trends from 1986 Onwards

The dashboard offers valuable insights into subject uptake, gender representation, and teacher numbers across Scotland, providing a comprehensive picture from 1986 onwards. This historical perspective allows for trend analysis, highlighting potential areas of concern and charting the evolving landscape of Computing Science education.

Finalist Recognition and Ongoing Commitment

This project's merit is evident in its recognition as a finalist in the 2024 British Data Awards. With continued support from the amazing volunteers at the Scottish Tech Army this project will be maintained and updated. The most recent data is currently being processed.

Data-Driven Insights for a Thriving Future

Considering the vital role Computing Science plays in the modern economy, understanding these trends and challenges is critical. This interactive dashboard empowers stakeholders with valuable data to inform future strategies and ensure a thriving Computing Science ecosystem in Scotland.

Explore the Data and Join the Conversation

The interactive dashboard provides users with the ability to explore data on:

  • Uptake: Track trends in overall pupil uptake for Computing Science courses over time.

  • Gender: Gain insights into gender gap within the subject.

  • Teacher Numbers: Analyse the availability of qualified Computing Science teachers in Scotland.

  • Comparisons: Compare Computing Science data with other traditional STEM subjects.

This is an ongoing project, and we are committed to keeping the data up-to-date to continuously track trends.

Taking Action with Toni Scullion and Livingston James

In addition to exploring the data, those seriously interested in being involved in practical steps to bring about change for Scotland's tech talent pipeline in schools can connect with Toni Scullion. Toni is working in partnership with Livingston James to assemble a group of dedicated individuals committed to this critical mission.
